Sumo-Safari collision leaves 3 dead, 15 seriously injured

Three persons, including a minor girl and a brother-sister duo, were killed on-the-spot while 15 others from five different families sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between a Tata Sumo and a Tata Safari on the busy Kharar-Ropar stretch of National Highway-21 near Daonmajra village, some 3 km from Kharar, on Friday morning.

While the deceased Kashmir Singh (50) and his elder sister Vishna, in her mid-50s, of Loharali village near Gagret in Una district of Himachal Pradesh were carrying the mortal remains of their mother Kaushalya Devi, another deceased Isha, aged around 10, daughter of Shiv Kumar of Nuho Colony in Thermal Plant at Ghanauli near Ropar, was returning back with her mother from her summer vacation in Mussoorie (Uttarakhand).

The injured included Kashmir’s family members Shaloo, in her early 20s, Meena Kumari, Kuldeep Singh, in his late 20s, Usha, Rajinder Kumar and Krishna (Kashmir’s sister) besides Isha’s mother Jyoti, maternal uncle Neeraj, their neighbours Labh Singh, his wife Jaswinder Kaur, daughters Harpeet Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Rajwant Kaur, another neighbour Murari and their driver Kuldeep Singh Kashmir’s six injured family members were shifted to Chandigarh PGIMER, where their condition was reported to be critical, while the other injured were admitted at Kharar, Ropar and Kurali Civil Hospitals. While Kashmir’s family was on its way from their place to immerse his mother’s mortal remains in Haridwar (Uttarakhand) in a Tata Sumo, Isha along with her mother and others were returning back home from Mussoorie in a Tata Safari, Investigating Officer (IO) Sub-Inspector Purshotam Singh said.

The accident took place at around 6.30 am when Kuldeep suddenly lost control over the Tata Safari and collided head-on with Tata Sumo, driven by Kashmir, from the opposite direction. The collision was so strong that both the vehicles were badly damaged and it took a long time and much effort to pull the victims out of the mangled remains of the vehicles.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that Kuldeep was sleepy as he was driving throughout the night without having a nap on the way. The police have booked the Safari driver Kuldeep, who was also admitted at PGIMER, for causing deaths and injuries by rash and negligent driving under Sections 279, 337, 338, 427 and 304-A of the IPC. “We have impounded both the vehicles involved in the mishap while the accused will be arrested after he recovers,” said the IO.

Meanwhile, vehicular traffic on the busy highway remained badly disrupted after the mishap and normal traffic flow was restored only after the ill-fated vehicles were pulled away from the highway.
