Congress pushes to reap mileage from Gairsain issue

As the much-talked about Gairsain issue has been on the forefront of the Vijay Bahuguna-led State Government’s agenda ever since it came to power in Uttarakhand last year, now it seems the ruling party has decided not to lag behind in reaping the political dividends by raking up the same issue again.

Hailing the role of Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Govind Singh Kunjwal in ‘facilitating’ construction of Vidhan Sabha Bhawan in Gairsain, several party activists led by Prashant Bhainsora, chairman of the Jila Shahkari Bank (JSB), Almora, has now decided to organise a two-day ‘yatra’ titled ‘Bagnath to Jagnath’ from February 19 to honour Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

Among others top brass of the party including Union Cabinet Minister Harish Rawat, State Congress president Yashpal Arya, MP from Almora-Pithoragarh parliamentary constituency, Pradeep Tamta, Rajya Sabha MP,  Mahendra Mahra, all MLAs from the Bageshwar and Almora districts and other senior party leaders will be participating in this ‘yatra’, said Bhainsora.

The ‘yatra’ is basically to honour the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly for his role in facilitating the setting up of the State Assembly building in Gairsain as it is the wishes of the people of this hill State, he said.

More so, the chairman of the JSB, Almora, further said this two-day yatra is also an attempt to draw the attention of the State Government towards the challenges being faced by the people living in this mountainous region.

As the organisers informed, the ‘yatra’ will commence from Bagnath (Bageshwar) on February 19 and will stay at Dwarhat on the same day after covering some important destinations like Garur, Someshwar to name a few. Next day, as per the route chart of this ‘yata’, it will start from Ranikhet, and finally will culminate at Jagnath after covering important areas like Almora Assembly constituency, the organisers of this ‘yatra’ further said.

The interesting fact is that the Congress party may not like to be seen as taking the mileage of this Gairsain issue, but this long-pending issue has been on the centrestage of State politics after the Congress party took over in the State for the second term last year in March 2012.

By organising a Cabinet meet and more importantly, then laying foundation stone for the State Assembly building in Gairsain, the Congress-led state Government has only tried to strike a chord with the masses here.
