Sonia seeks liberal Central package for flood-hit areas

New Delhi: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and called for liberal assistance by the Centre to the people affected by inundation and cloudbursts in the two states.

Accompanied by defence minister A K Antony, she first reached Dehradun where Army officials briefed her about the extent of damage and the ongoing rescue operations after the landslide in Almora and some other areas of Uttarakhand.

Later on she surveyed the flood-ravaged districts of Bijnour, Muzaffarnagar, Rampur, Moradabad and Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh before returning to Delhi.

As soon as she came back to the Capital, the Congress chief talked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and suggested that the Centre assess the extent of damage in these areas and offer a liberal package to the two states to facilitate relief operations. The funds, she said, could be released through the National Calamity Relief Fund.
