Ramnagar

Ramnagar is a small town and municipal board in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India. It is located approximately 65 kilometers (40 mi) from Nainital, the headquarters of the district.

Ramnagar is the gateway to the Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest National park and a famous tourist destination of India. Garjiya Devi Temple and Seeta Bani Temple located nearby also attract many visitors.

History

The town was established and settled by Commissioner H. Ramsay in 1856-1884. During the British Rule tea gardens were developed in Ramnagar and nearby villages in Uttarakhand. But these tea gardens have been closed since a long time. The nearby Jim Corbett National Park is named after the hunter turned conservationist Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment. It is the oldest national park in India and attracts lots of tourists from India and other countries.

Ramnagar is a bustling market town situated on the rich farm-belt of the terai, on the south-eastern fringes of the great forests, in Nainital District. It is located on the banks of River Kosi and is 67 km south of Nainital.

Ramnagar is a popular tourist spot in the region, famous as the headquarters of the Corbett National Park and Project Tiger. Project Tiger Headquarter, which is located 200 m to the north of the bus stand in the Nainital direction at Ramnagar. Another major activity in the vicinity is fishing, but fishing permits should be obtained for the Project Tiger office. An animal fair organized here on the occasion of Kartik Purnima every year is another popular event.

Ramnagar is located at 29.40°N 79.12°E It has an average elevation of 345 metres (1,132 feet). Ramnagar is located at the foothills of the Himalayas on the bank of river Kosi. The town is well-known for being the gateway to Jim Corbett National Park and draws lot of tourist attention because of its geographical location. Its proximity to Nainital which is a famous hill station of Northern India makes it even more popular. Ramnagar is the gateway to western Kumaon and Chamoli. It is also the commencement point of Kumaon Hills with the nearby town of Haldwani. Ramnagar is also famous for International "Litchi farming". There is a Kosi Barrage in Ramnagar.

The mean annual temperature in Ramnagar varies from 15oC to 30oC and total annual rainfall is nearly 205 cm.

Visiting Places in Ramnagar :-

Jim Corbett National Park Jim Corbett National Park Corbett National Park is 51 km north of Ramnagar. Established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park, Corbett National Park is the oldest and one of the most sought after national parks in India. It is India's first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger. The park was named after the hunter-naturalist turned author and photographer, Jim Corbett who lived in the region and contributed in setting up this park. Visitors can move about in vehicles inside the park area after making entries at the respective gates. Tourists can drive their own cars inside Corbett or can hire vehicles from Ramnagar. Permits are necessary for entering Corbett Tiger Reserve. For day visits, permits are obtained at the respective Entry Gates. However, permits for night halts are issued at the CTR Reception Office at Ramnagar.

Garjiya Devi Temple

Garzia Temple Enroute to Dhikala at about 10 Kms. from Ramnagar there is a huge rock perching out of the Kosi river bed. On the pinnacle there is a beautiful temple of Durga Devi named as Garjia Devi. One has to climb a huge number of narrow stairs to reach the temple. An enchanting view of river Kosi can be seen from the top of the rock. It is a good place for bathing, basking, worship & lunch enroute to Corbet park.

Garjiya Devi Temple is situated on a huge rock amid the River Kosi, 14 km from Ramnagar. It is a very famous temple and a large fair is organized at this Shakti shrine on Kartik Purnima that draws a large number of pilgrims and devotees. It is said that a couple has to go in that temple to take the blessings of the Garjiya Maa who is the presiding deity.

Seeta Bani Temple Seeta Bani Temple is dedicated to Devi Sita, consort of Lord Rama. It is believed that she entered into the lap of Mother Earth here. Every year, a fair is held here during Ramanavami. It is located at a distance of 20 km from Ramnagar.

Other places worth visiting in the region are the Crocodile Pool, Dhikala Machaan, Getheryo Library (Dhikala), Corbett Museum (Dhangadi gate), Corbett falls.

Ramnagar in Uttarakhand is home to the reception center for the famous Corbett Tiger Reserve and Jim Corbett National Park. There are several hotels and resorts in and around Ramnagar, and there are plenty of jeeps for hire in Ramnagar.
