Gujarat University creates record in IAF recruitment

For the first time, as many as 57 students from a university have been selected to various departments of Indian Air Force (IAF).

The IAF, had, on Sunday held a recruitment drive wherein fifty-seven students from Gujarat University got the nod to be part of the team that helps to monitor the Indian skies.

In the preliminary round, Air Force officials interviewed 750 students from different disciplines on Friday and Sunday.

Following this, they zeroed in on 57 students for the final selection and training at Dehradun. Thirty-six male and 21 female students form the gender dynamics of the group.

Air Force officials say that so many students have not been selected from any university.

Previously, Pune University held the record for sending students to the air arm through recruitment drive. Fifteen Pune students from a total of 928 had made it to the Air Force in that drive.

Out of 57 students, twelve made it to the elite 'Flying Branch'."These students have broken the myth associated with Gujaratis. Now, no one can say that Gujaratis don't opt for careers in armed forces," said GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi. According to the V-C, the students were selected in four major departments of the Air Force - flying, education, accounts and meteorological.
The students went through rigorous tests conducted by IAF officials who had come from Dehradun. The tests included general awareness, English communication and psychological tests.

Previously, IAF was only interested in science graduates and post-graduates. But, in a major policy shift, they have this year invited final year and PG students of all streams. Thus, even Arts and Commerce students participated in the fast-track selection process.

Wing commander Naga Sunadaram and Wing commander HS Chauhan oversaw proceedings of the tests.

The participation of female students in the selection process was a highly laudable effort. "Four of our girls were selected to the Flying branch, which is a remarkable achievement," said the VC.

All the selected students will undergo a final round of selection and training at Dehradun from March 1 to 28. After the final selection, they will receive training for a year before they officially join IAF.
