CHANDIGARH: The surplus arrival of tomato in the Sector-26 vegetable market from Haldwani, Punjab and Haryana have forced the wholesale dealers to reduce the rates to Rs 16-20 per kg, but in retail market vendors are charging anywhere between Rs 20-40 per kg.
The cut in the rates has not percolated to the doorsteps of people across the city.
One of the wholesale dealer, Kewal Kumar, said, 'From last two days, there has been an increased supply of tomato from Haldwani, Punjab and Haryana. As a result the price has fell to Rs 9-10 per kg in the wholesale market. The retail prices should also be somewhere Rs 16-18 across city markets.'
Whereas a vendor in Sector 20 has been selling tomatoes for Rs 40 per kg as usual, others in Sector 23 and Sector 8 have been selling it between Rs 30 and Rs 40 per kg. In sectors 36 and 37, the rate is Rs 20-25 per kg.
A Sector 37-based home-maker said, 'I bought it for Rs 20 a kg on Sunday morning. The price keeps fluctuating on daily basis.'
Explaining the difference in prices, Kumar said, 'One reason is the surplus supply and the other is the end of marriage season, which has brought down the demand for the kitchen commodity.'
A Sector 15-based senior citizen Ramesh Kumar Gupta said, 'The administration must intervene to set uniformity in prices.'
