Uttarakhand govt keen to expedite Vyasi project

Dehra Dun, Mar 25 (PTI) The Uttarakhand government has sent a detailed report of the 120-MW Vyasi power project to the Central Water Commission (CWC) for approval as part of its efforts to expedite electricity-generation ventures. Replying to a motion during zero hour, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Pant told the Assembly that since Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have so far failed to agree over the 420-MW Lakhwar-Vyasi multipurpose project, Uttarakhand government has decided to go ahead with the 120 MW Vyasi part the project which comes under its control. Pant said Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) has been asked to complete all formalities regarding the Vyasi project so that it could be constructed and commissioned as soon as possible. He said that the detailed project report has been sent to the CWC for clearance. 420 MW Lakhwar-Vyasi project, comprising 300 MW Lakhwar and 120 MW Vyasi, was conceptualised in 1986 while Uttar Pradesh was undivided. After creation of Uttarakhand in 2000, the project was handed over to power major NHPC. Later the government took it back from NHPC and handed it over to UJVNL. The multi-purpose project would not only produce electricity but also provide irrigation and drinking water to neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh besides Uttarakhand.
