Uttarkashi, May 20 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' today inaugurated the 8th National Rafting Championship held in the heart-captivating valley of Har Ki Doon on the Tons river here. While inaugurating the ceremony at GIC, Mori premises, Dr Nishank said Uttarakhand has a great potential for tourism and specially adventure tourism and the state government is constantly trying to develop natural and untouched areas in the of the state into world class tourist places. He said due to continued efforts of the government, state is rapidly getting recognition as one of the best adventure tourism places in the country. He further added that region from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh has already made its mark in the field of rafting on the world map. In 1990, a total of five companies was running river rafting, whereas, the number of companies at present had reached to 131. As many as 123 trekking-routes for trekking and 83 peaks for mountaineering were also available for the tourists, he added. He further stipulated that many schemes have been launched for promoting self-employment in the field of tourism under Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Tourism Self-Employment Scheme. The CM hoped that the Championship held in the region would not only help promoting adventure tourism but would also fetch employment opportunities for the local youth. Teams from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and ITBP including four Women’s teams are participating in the Championship.
