Dehradun, Apr 30 (PTI) The Uttarakhand government will construct 20,000 polyhouses to promote farming of fruits, vegetables, spices and flowers in the state. The state government has approved an action plan of Rs 40 crore to stress on promotion of cash crops as a main source of income for the farmer, official sources said today. Under the plan special emphasis has been laid on vegetable and spice farming and 50 to 75 per cent of the total funds are earmarked for that. Emphasis has also been put on farming of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs in a total area of 3,684 hectares in the state under this plan. For this 20,000 polyhouses would also be constructed under the Chief Ministers protected garden development scheme. Polyhouse is a protective shade made up of polythene used for growing high value agricultural products. It is semi-circular, square or elongated in shape and temperature, humidity, ventilation of air are controlled by the equipments fixed in the polyhouse. State's Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar had recently said that Uttarakhand has a great potential for production of vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices and honey.
