New Delhi: A month after the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) asked Alaknanda Hydro Power Company (AHPCL) to stop construction at a hydrolectric project in Uttarakhand, the ministry on Thursday allowed safety and electricity works up to 200 mw while refusing to lift the stop-construction order.
The MoEF had stopped the construction of a dam on the river Alaknanda, a tributary of the Ganga, in the Srinagar valley after BJP leader Uma Bharti went on a fast demanding that the Dhari Devi temple, where the construction is taking place, should be saved from submergence.
As part of the new order, the ministry has asked AHPCL to prepare a modified plan to preserve the religious sanctity of the temple and examine how the part of the rock on which the platform of the deity has been constructed and the one that formed its backdrop maintain contact once the rock is elevated.
The company will also have to construct walls over a length of one kilometre at the dam, desilting basin and power house. “AHPCL will have to submit a detailed action plan along with bank guarantees of R1 crore to the state pollution control board,” the order said
