DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna is likely to contest the state legislative assembly elections from Sitarganj constituency in Udham Singh Nagar
district. The chief minister hinted at his possible candidature from
the constituency while addressing a public gathering in Sitarganj on
Sunday.
Bahuguna, currently a parliamentarian from Tehri, needs to be elected as a Congress legislator before completion of six months in office for him to continue as the chief minister of the state.
His decision to contest from the constituency comes following the resignation of BJP MLA from Sitarganj, Kiran Mandal, who joined the Congress amid allegations of horse trading.
"The Congress leadership will decide on who will contest from this constituency. However, I am keen to contest from this seat," said Bahuguna.
Bahuguna also announced his government's decision to fulfill Mandal's demands related to providing ownership rights on agricultural land to the economically backward Bengalis in the constituency and establishment of postgraduate degree college and community health centres.
The election commission is yet to finalize a date for the bypolls which are likely to be held before September 13 this year when Bahuguna completes six months in office.
