The leopard was killed in Tunakhal of Ekeshwar block in Pauri
district on Saturday night. The local residents who were living in fear
of the man-eater after a leopard had allgedly killed businessman
Sanjay Kumar in Tunakhal on July 15. His mauled body was recovered near
his shop after which the villagers raised the demand for action.
The same leopard is also suspected of having killed another person
and attacking women returning to the village after collecting fodder in
the same area.
The Forest Department declared this leopard allegedly to be a man-eater on July 19 following which the Garhwal
divisional forest officer MB Singh deputed a hunter and tree staff members to kill the big cat.
Singh told The Pioneer that the man-eater was killed by the
authorised hunter Joy Hukel near the area where it had killed a person
in the past.
He averred that the possibility of the big cat shot being a man-eater
is close to 90 per cent, because its teeth and claws were damaged which
is one of the reasons why some big cats turn into a man-eater. The
hunter was assisted by forest guard Mahipal and other department staff.
