‘Dehraadun Diary’ set for release in Jan

After having been mentioned, down the decades,  in many films and film songs, finally Dehradun will feature in the title of a film — Dehraadun Diary which is slated for release in the new year (January) .

Karan Johar shot for Student of the Year at various locations in Dehradun but the city was mentioned no where in the film.

And this was not  the first time that this happened. In the 1960s, there came many films that were shot in Dehradun  and some which just mentioned Dehradun or Mussoorie but were actually not shot here. Vijay Anand’s Teesri Manzil starring Shammi Kapoor was shot in Mussoorie. Some say that the old Hakmans Grand Hotel on Mall Road was the backdrop of the thriller. But it cannot be said definitely. In the first few scenes of the movie, we see Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh buying train tickets to Dehradun

In the film Patanga in 1949, there was a song that is a great hit till now. It mentions Dehradun in an interesting way. Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, wahaan se kiya hai telephone/tumhaari yaad stataati hai is the song and it also has the line Hum Burma ki galiyon mein, aur tum ho Dehradun/ tumhaari yaad satati hai. It is quite clear that Bollywood has always placed Dehradun on a pedestal and it has always  been associated with natural beauty, comfort , luxury and a holiday mood.

But for the first time has come a film that is using the name of the city in its title. The film was shot last year at several locations including the picturesque Forest Research Institute, the Mindrolling Stupa at Clement Town and the Jollygrant airport.

The film stars Ragini Nandwani, who is being seen  as ‘Lovely’, an unconventional bahu Lovely in Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, Adhyayan Suman  and Rohit Bakshi.

Directed by Milind Ukey of Paathshaala fame, the film talks about fight against flawed systems in the country and ordinary people who put up an extraordinary fight for justice. Preeti, a free spirited daughter of Sadgun Thakur, is in love with Anshul, son of an IAS officer. Their match is not acceptable to Preeti's family and in a fit of rage Preeti's brother kills Anshul for his family. And this is where the story begins.

Having lost their young son, the parents of Anshul are there on confronted by the corrupt system. They can't match steps with Thakur's political powers and ways to shield his son. However, encouraged and supported by Anshul's younger brother Akash, the old couple makes a resolve-to fight, fight till they get justice.

The film is,reportedly, based on a true story but the story is not related to Dehradun. The producer of the film, Anita Dhawan Nandwani who belongs to Dehradun, wanted to place the name of her city in the title of the film. She says that the movie exposes the nexus between the politicians, gangsters and the administration. “As the heroine writes a diary and the truth comes out through the diary, the name is Dehraadun Diary.” She told The Pioneer that the movie ends on a happy note, with justice prevailing.

The film is the journey of the mother who has lost the child she once held in her hands and dreamt of an old age holding his hands.

It remains to be seen how the film will be received by the audiences in Dehradun and all over the country. Dehradun will be a name which will be heard and seen a lot next month due to the release of the film.
