Uttarakhand has come under the grip of cold conditions due to moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches and widespread rainfall in the plains of the State. Prominent hill stations like Mussoorie, Ranikhet, Dhanaulti and Nainital also experienced moderate snowfall with rain on Friday.
The State capital witnessed light drizzle in the morning and a cloudy sky throughout the day compelling many Doon residents to remain indoors. The director of Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre Anand Sharma said that the weather conditions will start improving from Saturday, but the maximum temperature will increase and minimum temperature will decrease in the next couple of days in the State. “In general, the forecast for the next 24 hours is thunder cloud development in some areas and rain/snow possible at isolated places especially in mountains of Uttarakhand,” Sharma added.
Rain in the morning and a cloudy sky thereafter affected routine life especially for older persons who preferred to remain indoors or huddle around wood stoves lit in the courtyard. The attendance of students in different government schools were reported to be lesser than the previous day. Many roads saw thin traffic while the earnings of daily wagers and some roadside vendors were also affected. Dehradun resident Anushka Bisht said that few years ago, snowfall in the hills and rainfall in the plains was experienced generally in the first week of January, but this year it is being experienced earlier.
Due to change in weather conditions, tourists started reaching hill stations like Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Ranikhet and other places with the early snowfall being considered good for state tourism.
Due to cold conditions, the participation of protesters of different originations outside Vidhan Sabha was very low. Due to rainfall in the early morning, muddy conditions prevailed at the protest sites. Some protesters were seen warming themselves around wood stoves in their shelters.
Sharma said the cold conditions in plains and chilly conditions in mountainous parts prevailed due to western disturbance above Jammu and Kashmir along with circulation in areas of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan advancing into parts of Uttarakhand.
Areas in higher altitudes like Mandal, Tapovan, Malari, Joshimath, Badrinath, Kedarnath,Tungnath, Rudranath, Sukhidhar, Harshil, Gangotri, Chakrata, Kailash Mansarovar route and Auli received moderate to heavy snowfall, while even areas at comparatively lower altitude like Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Surkanda experienced moderate snowfall accompanied by rains.
“Due to decrease in temperate by three to four degrees, foggy conditions will prevail in the plains in Haridwar, Udhamsinghnagar and other places in the next couple of days,” he added.
Sharma issued a high alert considering the possibility of snowfall in the mountains. Rainfall in plains and snowfall in mountains is considered beneficial for farmers.
