Tata retires but Uttarakhand gets benefits from Group's investments

Before retirement, iconic Tata group chairman Ratan Tata may not have made substantial investments in Uttarakhand after his Nov 15, 2010 visit here as per the wishes of the state government.

But the fact remains that returns on investments by Tata group never stopped for the hill state where companies like Tata Motors, Titan and Voltas set up manufacturing units during the past one decade with a total investment of over Rs 1,300 crore. Though Tata rolled out its first Nano car from Pantnagar facility few years ago, the small vehicle was later shifted to Sanand in Gujarat.

Among the new investment initiatives, Titan Industries is setting up a jewelry manufacturing unit at Pantnagar with an investment of Rs 50 crore. This will be the fifth unit by Titan in the hill state.

When Ratan Tata came to Dehradun in 2010, he had expressed desire to explore new investment opportunities in Uttarakhand. But nothing concrete came out of the various meetings between top state government and Tata group officials that followed Tata’s visit to Dehradun on Nov 15, 2010.“The fact remains that the state government also did not show much enthusiasm toward investments,” said a top government official.

Tata group had shown interest in exploring new investment opportunities in power, housing, tourism and IT sectors in Uttarakhand as a follow up to Ratan Tata’s visit here. But at that time, the then Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was dreaming high and wanted Tata group to invest Rs 10,000 crore through various proposals.

When contacted, chief secretary Alok Kumar Jain only said though the Tata group wanted some land for investment purpose in the hill state, no headway was made in such plans.
