‘UKD to soon take decision on Pritam Singh Panwar’s anti-party statements’

The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal chief Trivendra Singh Panwar has said that a decision will soon be taken regarding party MLA and State Urban Development Minister Pritam Singh Panwar for his ‘anti-party’ statements.

The party will take action on the issue after January 10, he said. Political analysts state that soon after the Election Commission of India recognised the UKD-Progressive as the original party, the party once again appears to be going towards division as it did during the term of the previous State Government led by the BJP when the UKD had withdrawn its support to the Government. The dissent rising within the UKD may once again threaten its unity as it did in the past.

It will be recalled that recently PS Panwar had said that TS Panwar was acting autocratically and in spite of his tenure ending in July last year, had continued as the party chief by unconstitutionally extending the term of the working committee.

TS Panwar was quick to respond stating that PS Panwar had been influenced by the Congress into making such statements. However, not everyone in the UKD thinks so because leaders and members of the different factions who are opposed to TS Panwar have expressed their support to PS Panwar because they too state that the dictatorial attitude of the party chief has led to the political downfall of what was once the only regional party of Uttarakhand credited with having played an instrumental role in facilitating the creation of Uttarakhand.

The UKD chief had been dissatisfied with PS Panwar since the Tehri Parliamentary bypolls because he had not campaigned for the party candidate. This was one of the reasons why the Uttarkashi district unit of the UKD was dissolved after the Tehri Parliamentary bypolls. Observers point out that being a part of the State government has so far had a detrimental effect on the UKD. On the one hand the party maintains that Gairsain should be made the permanent State capital but on the other hand both the previous BJP led State government and the present Congress led State government have avoided taking concrete steps in this direction, as acknowledged by UKD leaders themselves.

In the past the UKD had withdrawn its support to the BJP-led State Government and if the present dissatisfaction escalates then a similar situation can not be ruled out. Presently, the party chief TS Panwar said that the party is focusing on the State-wide bandh it has called on January 10 to protest on domicile status criteria and other issues. A decision regarding PS Panwar will be taken after this, he said.
