BJP demands dismissal of Cong MLA from Uttarakhand assembly

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Opposition BJP on Tuesday demanded the dismissal of Harak Singh Rawat, agriculture minister in Vijay Bahuguna's cabinet, from the state assembly alleging that the cabinet minister's appointment as the head of two state-run corporations was "unconstitutional" as they were offices of profit.

A BJP delegation, led by the leader of Opposition in the state assembly Ajay Bhatt, made the demand by submitting a memorandum to Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi.

Saying that an MLA and minister could not occupy offices of profit, the BJP leader termed Rawat's appointment as the Chairman of Tarai Seeds Development Corporation and Uttarakhand Ex Servicemen Welfare Corporation as "unconstitutional".

The delegation comprising BJP MLAs and senior party leaders asked the governor to take cognisance of Section 2 of Article 191 of the Constitution and ensure that Rawat is dismissed as an MLA from the assembly.

The governor assured BJP leaders of examining the issues raised and to take whatever action is required in a non-partisan manner.

Rawat, however, said that being the agriculture minister he was entitled to head any department coming under the broad head of his ministry and the question of holding two offices of profit does not even arise.
