Uttarakhand to get Rs 6,687cr aid

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief secretary Subhash Kumar said on Saturday that Union Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) agreed to sanction Rs 6687 crore to the state for its rebuilding and reconstruction projects.

He said the money is a part of a proposal for Rs 13,800 crore sent by Uttarakhand government as financial assistance to the state a couple of weeks ago for re-building calamity-hit Uttarakhand districts.

The proposal for Rs 13,800 crore to central government on the basis of same amount of losses suffered by state in the flash floods on June 16 and June 17.

Kumar said that the IMG gave its consent at a meeting on Friday in New Delhi. He said now the proposal is waiting to get a final green signal from Cabinet Committee on Uttarakhand headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He said the Uttarakhand government will get a loan of Rs 3000 crore from Asian Development Bank and World Bank as externally-Aided Project out of a total of Rs 6687 crore financial assistance. He said 90% of the loan will be repaid by Central government while 10% to be repaid by state government.

Apart from the Rs 3000 crore loan, Rs 1187 crore will released for the National Disaster Response Force, Rs1500 crore from centrally-aided projects and another Rs1500 crore as additional central aid.

The funds will be utilized in re-developing and re-building infrastructure like roads, drinking water projects, irrigation, power projects and other basic amenities which were damaged in the flash floods, he said.

"As re-building and reconstruction is on the top of our list of priorities, we need to utilize the amount in a proper way so as to prevent misuse at the cost of infrastructure and other basic amenities," Kumar said.

Kumar said UPA government has so far released Rs 390 crore while another amount of Rs 250 crore will be released soon.
