DEHRADUN: The strike of around two lakh government employees across Uttarakhand's 13 districts in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions entered its second day on Friday.
The employees went on the strike a day earlier to press for their demands including three promotions to those who have completed 30-year service, payment of conveyance allowance and removal of discrepancies relating to their pay structures.
Uttarakhand Employees Joint Council president (UEJC) Prahalad Singh said they were forced to go on the strike after top officials expressed their inability to meet their demands saying they could be met only after the cabinet approval. "Under these circumstances, we were left with no option but to resort to the strike," said Singh.
The employees threatened to intensify their strike from October 21 if the government does not meet their demands. "By seeking support of the class fourth and ministerial staff employees, we will paralyze the work in government and other related organizations if our demands are not met," said UEJC office bearer Pradeep Kohli.
The striking employees took out processions and held demonstrations in Dehradun, other district and block headquarters.
Chief secretary Subhash Kumar said the government has met their eight out of 11 demands. "The remaining would be met after obtaining approval from the state cabinet," he said. "They should not adopt adamant stance and come to the table to help resolve the crisis."
