Monsoon arrives in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN: Monsoon set in over in Uttarakhand on Wednesday with several places in both Kumaon and Garhwal regions receiving rains. The MeT department issued a warning of heavy showers and moderate landslides in parts of the state.

"The southwest monsoon has arrived in Uttarakhand and conditions are favourable for widespread rainfall across the state in the coming days. We have already issued a forecast of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the Garhwal region and some parts of Kumaon. Other parts of the state are also likely to receive light to moderate or rather heavy rainfall," said Anand Sharma, director, Meteorological Centre, Dehradun.

Significantly, the MeT department has issued warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places especially in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh districts of the state during next 48-hours starting from Thursday morning.

Some parts of the state have been receiving regular rainfall since past couple of days with Uttarkashi recording 28 mm of rainfall in past 24-hours, while Dehradun witnessed 3.7 mm rainfall and Pantnagar recorded over 2 mm of rainfall in the same period.

Moreover, the arrival of monsoon has also brought respite to farmers and the government as the predicted rainfall is likely to make up for the deficiency in June, that stands at whopping 42%. "The first fortnight of June was almost dry, causing water deficiency in the state. However, the arrival of monsoon will surely improve the situation," said the MeT director.
