Heavy rains in Uttarakhand spark flood fears

Haridwar, July 17 (ANI): Heavy rainfall in Haridwar city of Uttarakhand caused extensive water logging in the area, sparking fear of floods. Reports of water logging started pouring in from across the city within hours of the downpour. Heavy traffic snarls were witnessed at various parts of the temple town. Water gushed into houses and shops, adding to the residents' woes. The locals criticised the administration and state government for their apathy. Another resident, Shyam Lal said that the city infrastructure could not sustain heavy rains. Annual monsoon season is vital for India as half of its cropland lacks irrigation. But excessive rains cause many problems such as floods, landslides and water borne diseases.
