Complaint against inspector: A road inspector of the Regional Transport Office allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a Chukhuwala resident at the time of a fitness examination at the RTO. However, when the latter refused to give it, the inspector allegedly beat him up. The victim has lodged a complaint at the Dalanwala police station. Meanwhile, the road inspector, Ram Prakash Rathore, has also lodged a complaint of being allegedly beaten up by the complainant, Ratan Lal Sonkar. The police said it had received complaints from both sides and would investigate the matter.
Over 20 hurt in mishap: Over 20 persons, including women and children, sustained injuries when the bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck in Timil village, Shaspur, on Thursday. The police and 108 emergency vans reached the spot and rushed the injured to the hospital.
Training programme from June 27: The Forest Research Institute’s Forest Ecology and Environment Division will be organising a one-week short-term training programme on “Ecological restoration of mined lands” from June 27 to July1. The training will be imparted to officers and executives of Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Dhanbad, a subsidiary company of Coal India Limited.
Rs 10.47 cr released for development: A sum of Rs 10.47 crore has been released under the Backward Area Development Fund for Champawat district. District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar Pandey on Thursday stated that 967 schemes had been prepared for the district and the same were sent to the Centre for approval after being ratified by the District Planning Committee. The Centre had sanctioned an amount of Rs 11.63 crore and released 90 per cent of the amount. The project covers Champawat, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts.
Drip irrigation technique in Champawat: The in-charge for the 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee in the state, Harbhajan Singh Cheema, has advocated introduction of drip irrigation technique in Champawat district on experimental basis. Cheema said the technique could help in increasing agricultural production in areas where there is water scarcity. Champawat ha been amongst the top performers with regards to implementation of the programme in the state.
Villagers thrash SDO in Nainital dist: Some villagers allegedly thrashed a Subdivisional Officer (SDO) in Lal Kuan area of Nainital district when he tried to put a stop to illegal quarrying being carried out. The SDO identified as Balwant Singh Shahi scampered to save his life. The matter is being investigated by the police. The SDO has also alleged that casteist remarks were also used against him by the accused.
Man’s decomposed body found: A decomposed body of a man by the police on Wednesday evening from Bhumiyadhar area. The deceased is yet to be identified. He is said to be about 45 years of age and was wearing a shirt and pyjamas. The body has been kept in a morgue near the jail compound. Investigations are on in the matter.

The worst affected areas are the Terai region in Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts that are experiencing hot and humid weather conditions these days. The problem of unscheduled cuts is being aired by the people at the ongoing Atal Chaupals being organised by the government. In Ramnagar, the agitated people under the leadership of local traders went on to protest outside the office of the Power Department on Wednesday. Protests are also being reported from Rudrapur, Kashipur and Haldwani.
