The religious aspect and the legends of Kumbh Mela remains associated to very old date back to the time when Kalasha (pot of nectar for immortality) was recovered from the churning of premodial ocean for which a tensed war between God and Demon ensued.
As per Hindu mythology and history, Lord Bharma - God of creation gave some advise to the gods to get rid of their weakness, caused during the creation of earth. Following the advise of Lord Brahma, the god began the task of churning od ocean in order to achieve nectar (Amrit) from its water. As the task was very tough, God sought assistance of demons and made a deal with demon that they could have latter half of the nectar that was to be obtained from churning of Ocean. The demons ageered to it.
However after God became successful in procuring the nectar from the beds of ocean, the tried to run away with nectar to prevent if from demons, who were more powerful than God (devtas). The saftey of Amrit (nectar procured from chruning of ocean) was handed over to four gods i.e. Brahaspati, Surya, Chandra and Shani who ram away with nectar pot (Amrit Kalasha) to hid away the nectar from demons.
After learning this conspiracy of devtas, demons turned furious and chased the 4 devtas (god) running with Nectar por. The chase, lasted for 12 days and night during which the devtas and Asuras went round the eath and during this chase, Devtas (god) put Amrit Kalasha at Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik.
To commemorate this holy event of the Amrit Kalasha being put at four different places, Kumbh Mela is celebrated. Not only this, Astrologer also have belief that the water of Holy Gangas attain nectar-like properties during the Kumbh Mela season.
