Uttarakhand: BJP charges government of failure, demands special session of Assembly

Dehradun: Opposition BJP in Uttarakhand on Sunday charged the state government with failure on all fronts and demanded a special session of the legislative Assembly to debate the problems afflicting the state.

A party delegation, led by the leader of opposition in the state assembly Ajay Bhatt called on the Governor Aziz Qureshi to ask him to convene a special session of the House.

Alleging that relief measures were yet to pick up speed in cloudburst-hit Uttarkashi district where 28 people were killed and thousand others rendered homeless last month, Bhatt said the government needs to address the problems being faced by people in the area.

He claimed that resentment was brewing up among employees of sugar mills after the government took a decision to run them under PPP mode and demanded that the move be withdrawn.

The BJP leader said that anarchic conditions were prevailing in the state with total breakdown of law and order in Udhamsingh Nagar district and shortage of teachers and doctors in different areas.

Former MLA expelled from BSP

Dehra Dun: Former Uttarakhand MLA Narayan Pal and his brother have been expelled from the Bahujan Samaj Party for alleged anti-party activities.

Narayan Pal and his brother Mohan Pal were expelled from the BSP on Sunday by in-charge of party affairs in Uttarakhand Ramachal Rajbhar, party leaders said.
 

The two were expelled from the BSP for "anti-party activities", they said.

Pal, who represented Sitarganj seat twice in Uttarakhand assembly in 2002 and 2007, had bit the dust in the recent assembly election.

Petrol price hike rocks Uttarakhand Assembly

Dehra Dun, May 31 (PTI) Uttarakhand Assembly today saw unruly scenes after Opposition repeatedly disrupted House proceedings demanding discussion over the petrol price hike. As the House assembled for the day, the Opposition members led by Leader of the Opposition Ajay Bhatt (BJP) rose to their feet demanding a discussion on the hike in prices of petrol and other commodities. Bhatt also alleged that "anti-people policies of both the Congress-led government at the Centre and the state have made it difficult for the common man to meet their ends." "While the Centre has failed to control skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, the state government increased the lower limit of VAT to 5 per cent and hiked the power tariff, adding to the sufferings of the common man," Bhatt said. He appealed to Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal to give permission to raise the issue immediately under the Rule 310 (adjournment motion). However, the Speaker asked the members to take their seats stating that the issue could be raised later during the Zero Hour. However, the BJP members did not heed to his repeated pleas and instead jumped into the Well to press for their demand. They also shouted against the Centre and the state government. As the din continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 1130 hrs and then till 1220 hrs. After the House re-assembled, the BJP members again rose to their feet pressing to discuss the issue under Adjournment motion. Ignoring repeated pleas of Kunjwal, the members again trooped into the Well forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till 1600 hrs. The BJP members also staged a dharna in the corridor of the Assembly and shouted slogans against the government. Talking to reporters, Bhatt said the government has no explanation for its failure to check inflation and that is why it is shying away from the discussion in the House. PTI

Uttarakhand Assembly budget session from Mar 8, 2010

Dehradun, Feb 10 (PTI) The budget session of the Uttarakhand Assembly will begin on March 8 with the customary address of Governor Margaret Alva on the opening day.

The session is likely to end on March 20, official sources said today.

Uproar in Uttarakhand Assembly

Uttarakhand assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes with main opposition Congress demanding to hand over inquiry of Mahima Seth murder case to CBI forcing the Speaker to adjourn the house for lunch break.

The issue of deteriorating law and order situation in the state was raised by Congress members led by Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat, who said that police has failed to work out the rape and murder of 7-year-old Mahima Seth, a resident of Ramanagar town, even after more than one month has passed since the incident.

Similarly, no arrest has so far been made in Sonu Verma murder case of Ramnagar, Rawat said alleging that police is lathicharging the people, who demonstrate peacefully against government's anti-people policies.

Criticising the BJP government for downing the morale of police force in the state, Rawat said criminals are being patronised by big leaders and even by ministers.

In this regard, he said, the incidents of loot, dacoity, rape and murder are rising in the state and people of the state are feeling insecured.

Replying to the issue, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Pant said police has failed to work out the Mahima murder case as it is a blind case. He said police is sincerely making efforts to solve the case and has even announced an award of Rs 10,000 to the person giving clue in this regard.

Pant also said that there is a significant fall in the cases of loot, murder and dacoity upto November this year against the same period last year.

A total of 7507 crimes were registered, while 8183 criminals were arrested this year, he said.

Dissatisfied with the minister's reply, Congress members demanded to hand over investigations of Mahima case to CBI and trooped into the well to press for their demand.

Speaker Harbans Kapoor asked the members to take their seats. As members did not pay heed to his repeated pleas, Kapoor adjourned the House for lunch break.
