Anti-Khanduri protests: BJP tries to broker peace in Uttarakhand unit

Dehradun, October 24 : A firefighting exercise has been initiated by the BJP central leadership to stem the rebellion against Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri.
Party sources say that the dissident leaders including the former chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiari have been summoned by the party high command to Delhi for a series of meetings scheduled for Friday evening and Saturday. Sources say that tourism minister Prakash Pant and health minister Dr Ramesh Pokhrial Nishank are also in Delhi for the discussions. Khanduri also left for the national capital on Friday afternoon.

Nishank was scheduled to meet former BJP president Venkiah Naidu later in the day. The legislators are to be addressed by senior party leader Sushma Swaraj and Koshiari is slated to meet party president Rajnath Singh who is also likely to have a one-to-one meeting with Khanduri. Former party president Murli Manohar Joshi is also expected to be present in some of these meetings.

The BJP leadership wants to ensure that there is no disruption in the preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Apart from this, the party leadership is also engrossed in fighting the elections in the key states of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.

The dissidence in the Uttarakhand BJP has been simmering for the last three months. In August this year, more than 20 legislators had camped at the party headquarters in Delhi seeking a change in the state leadership. At that point, they were told by the party high command to go back and ensure a party victory in the Panchayat elections. With the BJP having won these elections, there were reports earlier this week of 17 legislators having tendered their resignations. The party leadership denied these reports and Khanduri expressed his displeasure at such reports coming in the media at repeated intervals.
Sources say that the party high command has been looking at ways to woo the dissidents. One of the measures taken in this direction was the recent decision of the state cabinet to bring 23 cells and committees outside the purview of office of profit.

The party leadership in Uttarakhand is maintaining a silence on the issue.
