Overflowing Uttarkhand dams add to UP woes

LUCKNOW: Overall flood situation in UP worsened on Tuesday with nine more western and eastern districts being declared flood-hit. More bad news is in store for the state with Uttarakhand likely to release more water from Tehri dam.

Many stretches of highways connecting Lucknow to western UP and Delhi, meanwhile, remained under two to five feet water. With link roads to flood-affected areas remaining cut off, Bijnore and Bareilly authorities called Army for relief and rescue operations. Heavy rains coupled with release of a large volume of water from Kalagarh dam in Uttarakhand helped overflowing Ramganga to enter several residential areas and AIR and DD offices of Bareilly town.

AIR and DD have already suspended broadcast and telecast respectively.

The Bareilly-Badaun highway too has been flooded. After the flooding of NH 24, this NH was used for traffic coming from Delhi to Lucknow. Sources feared that this NH would also be closed, leaving only Delhi-Agra-Lucknow NH open for traffic between Delhi and Lucknow. With three more people dying on Tuesday, flood-related deaths rose to 125 on Tuesday. The ravaging rivers have affected a population of 21 lakh, besides causing extensive damage to crops over 16 lakh hectare. Besides ravaging Bijnore, the swollen Ganga has flooded over 100 villages in Badaun, Amroha and Shahabad. As boats could not reach several marooned villages, food packets have been air dropped for trapped people. However, it proved to be too little for thousands of people taking shelter on rooftops and high-rise embankments. In Moradabad, 1.7 lakh people have been affected after the release of excess water from Narora barrage and Tehri dam into the Ganga.
