Centre clears decks to recruit over 3000 policemen in U'Khand

Dehradun: The Centre has approved the proposal for recruiting 3153 police personnel in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said on Thursday.

The proposal was approved at the Central Zonal Council meeting, presided by Home Minister P Chidambaram, yesterday, he said, adding that Uttarakhand government will soon start the process to fill up the 3153 police posts. These posts were transferred to the state under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.

Chidambaram has also asked the Uttar Pradesh government to transfer Rs 1545.98 crore to Uttrakhand to pay pension dues for the period between November 9, 2000 to March 31, 2009, Nishank said.

In case, Uttar Pradesh does not transfer the money, the Home Minister assured Nishank that the Centre will give the amount from the funds for its parent state.

On the multipurpose 1000 Mw Tehri dam, Nishank claimed the Home Ministry is discussing a proposal for transferring 25 per cent share of Uttar Pradesh to Uttarakhand under the reorganisation act.

A proposal to this effect has already been sent to the Home Ministry by the union power ministry, he said.

Under the proposal, the Chief Minister said the hill state will get 250 Mw of power from the dam with immediate effect and also Rs 72 crore from the profit earned by Uttar Pradesh from the generation of 1980 million units.

Nishank demanded compensatory 2000 Mw of free power from the Centre in lieu of a decision to scrap three hydel projects.

A Group of Ministers, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, this year recommended the closure of the three big projects -- 600 Mw Loharinag Pala, 480 Mw Pala Maneri and 381 Mw Bhaironghati.

While, NTPC has already been assured of a compensation of Rs 650 crore for the Loharinag Pala project, Uttarakhand is yet to get any compensation for the other two.

Nishank also demanded 6 MMSCMD of gas from the centre for setting up two gas-based power plants with a total capacity of 1000 Mw. He also sought from the Centre to allocate coal blocks for the state in order to set up thermal power plants.

In addition to this, he said Union government must give early approval to 420 Mw Lakhwar Vyasi, 660 Mw Kishau and 30 Mw Jamrani multi-purpose projects in the state.
