Solar energy to electrify Uttarakhand Atal Grams

Dehradun: With a view to promote renewable energy in the state, the Atal Adarsh villages of Uttarakhand would be lighted up by means of solar energy.

It is noteworthy that each Nyay Panchayat headquarter has been chosen under the Atal Adarsh Gram scheme, taking the number of such villages to 670.

Under the first phase of this project, street lights would be set up in the 381 Atal Adarsh Grams in the Garhwal division, with an outlay of 30.88 crore.

The solar lighting would later be provided in the rest of the 289 Atal Adarsh Grams of the Kumaon division. More than 13,000 solar street lights would be set up under this scheme in the state.

The solar lighting work would be carried out by the Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Developmet Authority (UREDA), an agency which is promoting the use of renewable energy in the state. Around 90 per cent of the cost would be borne by the centre and 10 per cent by the state government.

Under the Atal Adarsh Gram Yojna, the government proposes to provide a slew of basic amenities to the targeted villages. Such villages would be provided with housing, roads, electricity, water and toilets so as to raise the level of the inhabitants. Floriculture and horticulture would also be promoted to provide source of income to the people.

UREDA Director Nitesh Jha says this would bring about a qualitative change in the life of the people and also promote sources of renewable energy.
