U'khand to Shift 1,041 Families to Temporary Shelters

Uttarakhand decided to shift 1,041 families, who were rendered homeless due to recent natural disasters, to temporary shelters till a concrete plan is worked out for them.

Around 5,000 people are still living in tents, government buildings or with their relatives, State principal secretary (Home) Rajeev Gupta said after a cabinet meeting.

The meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank, decided to shift the affected as the winter is set to start soon, he said.

Natural disasters like landslides, cloudburst and floods following incessant rains badly hit eight districts in which more than 200 people were killed and thousands others rendered homeless.

Of these 1,041 families, about 70 per cent belong to the regions of Almora, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts, Gupta said.

District magistrates have been asked to identify lands at the earliest for setting up of semi-permanent structures for the homeless for a period of 4 to 5 months.

The cabinet also decided to regularly review the relief works being done in the affected-areas through monitoring committees set up at state, district and block levels.

All the ministers have been asked to visit their respective districts and hold a meeting with the officials concerned on Wednesday, he said, adding that the chief minister would also hold a meeting through video-conferencing.
