Know about Panch Prayag

Prayag – confluence of two or more rivers have a significant place in Uttarakhand. Panch Prayag are 5 prayags where 5 rivers – Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Pindar, Nandakini and Dhauliganga meet the river Alaknanda. These 5 Prayags stand for worship and rituals.

Devprayag
Devprayag is one of the most prominent place among all 5 Prayags. It is the place where Bhagirathi (originating from Gaumukh near Gangotri) meets Alaknanda (originating from Alkapuri near Badrinath) and becomes Ganga. The Sangam (confluence) attaracts lot many pilgrims, it is believed that by taking bath in the sangam sins get absolved. There is Raghunath temple and an observatory in Devprayag .

How to Reach Devprayag : 58 kms from Rishikesh, 34 kms from Srinagar on NH 58 .

Rudraprayag
Rudraprayag is located at the confluence of Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers and has bifurcations for Kedarnath and Badrinath. Rudraprayag is a newly formed district headquarters. Koteshwar temple near Rudraprayag is located inside a cave and is a favourite destination of Shina devotees.
How to Reach Rudraprayag: 34 kms from Srinagar, 138 kms from Rishikesh.

Karnaprayag
Karnaprayag is located at the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar rivers. It is a growth centre with a small industrial area nearby at Shimli. Uma and Karna temples are located at Karnaprayag.

How to Reach Karnaprayag: 171 kms from Rishikesh.

Nandprayag
Nandprayag is located at the confluence of river Alaknanda and Nandakini (originates from a glacier near Nanda Devi mountain) . Gangeshwar and Chandrika Ma temples are situated at Nandprayag.

How to Reach Nandprayag: 191 kms from Rishikesh.

Vishnuprayag
Vishnuprayag is the fifth prayag and the first one on the river Alaknanda. Dhauliganga originating from Niti valley meets Alaknanda here. Vishnuprayag is surrounded by a rocky terrain an has strong currents in rivers.

How to Reach Vishnuprayag: 260 kms from Rishikesh, 14 kms from Joshimath (Rishikesh-Badrinath highway).
