UTTARAKHAND SAMACHAR

Bail granted: Six persons who had allegedly beaten up men for opposing eve-teasing at Maggi point were granted bail by the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Monday. The incident took place when tourists were coming back from Mussoorie and stopped at Maggi point, where the accused misbehaved with girl tourists. When the men accompanying them objected to it, they allegedly beat them up.

Two held: Acting on a tip-off, the police on Monday arrested two persons for smuggling 20 boxes of liquor at Vikasnagar in Dehradun. The police said they had brought liquor from Chandigarh to sell it in Dehradun and Haridwar.

Woman booked: A woman has been booked for allegedly setting the car of her brother-in-law afire over some dispute. Dinesh Rawat, in his complaint to the police, alleged that Seema Rawat set his Indica afire in his house on Sunday. The police said the woman had been arrested.

Leopard captured: A leopard that had strayed into a village in Bageshwar district was on Monday captured by forest officials. RC Sharma, Divisional Forest Officer (Bageshwar) said the leopard was not a man-eater and would be released in forests soon.

Annual Day: The Vision Society of India celebrated its 10th annual day at a city hotel off late. Harbans Kapoor, Vidhan Sabha Speaker, was the chief guest on the occasion. The programme started with the lighting of a lamp. The president of the institution, Dr RN Singh, offered a garland to the chief guest.

Woman killed in Bindukhatta:An old woman was killed in the Bindukhatta area of Udham Singh Nagar following the collapse of a concrete structure near which she was washing clothes. The structure was a borewell storage tank near which 72-year-old Kumauli Devi was washing her clothes. She was buried under the rubble. Although people, who rushed to the spot after hearing a big noise, tried to save her, the woman succumbed to her injuries by the time she was taken out of the rubble. She was a resident of the Borang Patta area of Rajiv Nagar colony of the area.

Hindi Press Day:A number of journalists from across the Kumaon region gathered at Ramnagar to mark Hindi Press Day. The function that was held in a newly constructed auditorium in the town was also attended by Justice PC Pant of the Uttarakhand High Court and Kumaon University Vice-Chancellor VPS Arora. The journalists deliberated on the problems being faced by them while discharging their duties in the face of market-driven forces. Justice Pant, while speaking on the issue of media trial, said the media was free to criticise or appreciate judgements once they were given but must not try to create pressure in favour of any of the contesting parties.Professor Arora called upon the journalists to verify their facts before reporting and to talk to the “other side” in order to have balanced stories.

Youth Congress:The Youth Congress has started galvanising its cadre base for the coming Assembly poll in the state. Youth Congress chief for the Nainital Lok Sabha area Bhuvan Kapdi told the media on Monday at Nainital that the Youth Congress was looking for “Congress- minded” master coaches who would be imparting training with regard to the coming poll to the party cadre. The training would be held in three phases.

Pirated CDs seized:The Haldwani police seized a large number of pirated CDs during a raid carried out on a house in Line Number 6 in the town on Sunday evening. According to the information available, one of the accused, Tanvir, has been arrested following the recovery of more than 4,000 CDs from the house. It is learnt that he had been allegedly supplying pirated CDs across Kumaon, particularly Udham Singh Nagar district. He had also been arrested earlier on similar charges.

Fire in factory:A turpentine factory was gutted and two adjoining buildings were badly damaged in an incident of fire reported from Nilakot village in the Bagwalipokhar area of Dwarahat. The incident took place on Sunday evening.The loss incurred is being pegged at more than Rs 10 lakh. The fire is learnt to have been brought under control by personnel of the Ranikhet Fire Brigade and the locals after two hours. The cause of the fire that broke out while pine resin was being processed could not be ascertained immediately.
