Mock drill on plane hijacking: A mock drill on hijacking of an aeroplane was carried out at the Jollygrant Airport. Two miscreants hijacked the plane and created trouble at the airport. The airport official and the police, in a joint operation, rescued the passengers. All of them were safely evacuated from the plane while the hijackers were killed during the drill.

Injured kick-boxer: The Mahant Indresh Hospital authorities have taken upon themselves the responsibility of treating national-level kick-boxer Rashmi Bhardwaj (18). The hospital staff claimed that they would providing all facilities to the sportsperson. According to the Chief Medical Officer, Brig Ved Prakash, Rashmi was admitted to the hospital on June 26 with a head injury. She has won many medals at the national level and brought laurels to the state. Her parents on Tuesday sought the help of people in the treatment of their daughter.

Burn injuries: A woman caught fire while preparing food at her residence at Rishikesh in Dehradun district on Wednesday. She was lighting the burner of the cooking stove when suddenly her clothes caught fire. She was taken to a local hospital by her relatives. She has been identified as Rekha Pal of Indiranagar.

Leader ends fast: A senior leader of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (Panwar faction), Dr Shaktishail Kaparvan, has ended his five-day fast on the assurance given by SDM of a time-bound progress in all departments, and a review of action on pending issues before August 15.

Forest project begins in Rudrapur: In an attempt to resolve the issue of consistent depletion of traditional virgin trees in the forests of the Terai region, the Forest Department at Rudrapur has initiated the project of mixed forests in the area. A total of 934 hectares of forest area has been earmarked for this project and 4.67 lakh saplings are expected to be utilised. Officials of the department say this is the first time a new model has been created for the plantation season. July onwards, there will be a large-scale plantation of amla, jaamun, jackfruit, turmeric, peepal, banyan trees, etc.

Rain brings misery in parts of Kumaon: A heavy rainfall in several parts of Kumaon has resulted in a series of roadblocks across the region. In Pithoragarh district, the Dharchula-Tavaghat road is not functional due to landslides. In Haldwani, there has been severe water logging on the roads leading to Kaladungi, Nainital and Bareilly, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and vehicle-owners alike. Farmers in Khatima and Bageshwar are distressed over the adverse effect of the rain on their crops. According to the Meteorological Department, the arrival of south-west monsoon, accompanied by western disturbances, has resulted in a heavy downpour in the region.

Jawan sets wife on fire in Pithoragarh: An instance of a retired Border Security Force (BSF) Jawan allegedly attempting to set his wife on fire has come to light in Pithoragarh. According to reports, Narayan Dutt Joshi had an altercation with his wife Chandrakala on Monday night. The jawan, who was drunk at that time, went on to allegedly douse his wife with kerosene before torching her. It is learnt that the woman sustained 80 per cent burns and is battling for her life. The jawan has been arrested on a complaint of daughter of the couple Deepti Joshi.

Dumper falls into gorge, one dead: One person was killed when a dumper fell into a gorge near Dadhuli village in the Salt area in Almora district. The deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Kundan Giri of the Gularghatti area of Ramnagar. His accomplice Mukesh Singh (32) of Sagli village in the Dhumakot area sustained major injuries in the accident. The dumper was coming from Baijron in Garhwal and going to Ramnagar when the accident took place. The driver lost control over the vehicle.

Cleaning of drains in Bhimtal area: The operation to clean the drains leading to Kuantal in the Bhimtal area has yielded a huge quantity of debris. The cleaning operation was ordered by the Nainital administration following reports that people feared floods on account of the failure of the authorities to get the debris removed from the drains. The residents of the area are agitated over the fact that despite District Magistrate Shailesh Bagauli giving orders some days back for the cleaning of drains and nullahs leading to Bhimtal, nothing has been done in the direction till now.
