Monsoon relents temporarily in North India

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Monsoon was relatively subdued today in most parts of northern India as light showers occurred in some swathes of the region.

The national capital witnessed another dry day, with the maximum and minimum temperature settling at 35.2 deg C and 27.6 deg C respectively.

People in Uttarakhand heaved a sigh of relief after rains gave way to a sunny day. According to officials, 16 people have died and 70 injured in rain-related incidents this season. An alert has been sounded after rains yesterday triggered landslides in parts of the state.

Monsoon rains also became weaker in Uttar Pradesh even as rivers in the state continue to flow in full spate.

Jalaun (Mohana) received 11 mm of rainfall, Allahabad 8 mm and Varanasi and Kanpur 7 mm each, the MeT said.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at few places tomorrow though heavy rains are also expected at isolated places in western region, it said.

The day temperature hovered between three deg C above normal and one deg C below normal in the plains of plains of Punjab and Haryana, the MeT office said here.

The humidity levels ranged between 70 and 82 per cent in the region.

Hisar was the hottest in the two states with a high of 38.5 deg C, followed by Ambala 36.3 deg C, Patiala 35.5 deg C, Amritsar and Ludhiana 35 deg C each. Chandigarh recorded a day temperature of 34.8 deg C.

The MeT forecast that thundersquall with a wind speed exceeding 45 kmph is likely to hit some places in the region.

Light rains occurred at a few places in Rajasthan''s Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur divisions, while the weather remained dry in Ajmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner till morning. Jaipur and Kota received slight drizzle this evening.
