Man trampled by elephant: A man was trampled by an elephant in the Lakshman Jhula area of Rishikesh. The deceased, 65-year-old Pathania Bahadur of Nepalese origin had gone to the Narendra Nagar forests to collect wood for fuel when he was attacked by an elephant. The Rishikesh had witnessed a rise in the incidents of man-elephant conflict in the past few months. Earlier, two persons, including an industrialist, were trampled by an elephant.

Trekkers’ bodies: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Thursday disclosed that the state government had constituted a 15-member team of the National Institute of Mountaineering that would leave for the Sita glacier on Friday. It would report back to the administration for means to bring back the bodies of eight trekkers. He said if need be the state government would also press helicopters into service.

Effigy burnt: Activists of the Uttarakhand Congress Committee, led by former state Congress secretary Vishal Dobhal, on Thursday burnt an effigy of the state government in protest against an alleged health scam. The Congress workers gathered at the Ashley Hall Chowk where they brunt the effigy. They asked the Governor to order a probe into the health scam.


Youngsters fire into air: In a freak incident reported from the Naukuchiyatal area of Nainital district, four youngsters fled after firing into the air following a spat with some locals over eve-teasing. Two girls of Chanauti village were returning home late Wednesday evening after taking tuitions when four youngsters sitting in a road side eating joint made lewd comments on them. The girls rushed home and related the incident to the villagers that led to a dozen villagers rushing to the restaurant. Finding themselves trapped, two of the youngsters brought out their pistols and started firing into the air. This led to a commotion taking advantage of which the four youngsters fled from the spot in their car.

Hosiery shop gutted: A shop was gutted in a fire resulting from a short-circuit in the congested Sadar Bazar in Haldwani on Wednesday. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the fire under control. The personnel of the Fire Department were helped by the local shopkeepers in the effort. The fire could be doused in two hours. The shop selling hosiery products is learnt to have incurred heavy losses.

Youth drowned in canal: A youth from Jaspur was drowned in a canal in Ramnagar on Wednesday. According to sources, the deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Ghulam Moinuddin who was a resident of the Idgah Road area in Jaspur. He was on a visit to a madarsa in the Khatadi area of Ramnagar when he went to take a bath in the canal near the Balaji temple along with three others. A sudden gush of water led to his drowning. His body was fished out by divers after an hour.

Car falls into gorge; 2 killed: Two persons were killed and two were injured when the car in which they were travelling fell into a gorge near Ikuraula village of Almora on the Tuesday night. The deceased have been identified as Surendra Singh of Bunashpani village and Santosh Singh of Matkhani village in Almora. The car is learnt to have fallen 100 meters into the gorge. Those injured in the accident are Gopal Singh and Man Singh of Buranshpani village.

Freedom fighter dead: A freedom fighter from Rudrapur, Lallan Prasad Dwivedi passed away at Haldwani on Wednesday. It is learnt that he was suffering from a heart ailment for which he was being treated at the Sushila Tewari Memorial Hospital. Born in 1923 in Salempur village of Lar Block of Deoriya in Uttar Pradesh, Dwivedi had joined the struggle for freedom under the leadership of Baba Raghav Das. He had participated in the non co-operation and satyagraha movements launched by Mahatma Gandhi. He had been a staunch Gandhian throughout his life.
