Gangotri yatra route reopened for pilgrims

Dehra Dun, Aug 27 (PTI) The route to the Himalayan shrine of Gangotri, which was blocked for the last 20 days due to landslides following incessant rainfall, was finally reopened for pilgrims today, officials said here.The yatra to the three dhams -- Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath -- has been resumed. The routes to the shrines were affected in some areas after they were hit by landslides which were removed later in the day, they said.The officials said comparatively less rainfall was reported from the area today. But, owing to the debris and the miserable condition of the roads, the people of the area has to face much difficulties.At least 130 connection routes in the area were disrupted due to heavy landslides.Relief operations were on, with the authorities pressing machinery to clean the roads throughout the day.Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has directed the officials of the Disaster department and other important departments to take effective measures to deal with the situation.
