LUCKNOW: The rains revived after a three-day lull on Tuesday, but the flood situation in UP remained grim. The excess rains received last week have brought the rainfall back to normal level in the state.
The road routes connecting Delhi and Uttarakhand with western UP, however, remained disrupted though Delhi-Lucknow highway was opened for light weight vehicles after five days. Rail traffic between Delhi and Bareilly too was partially hit.
Release of water from dams in Uttarakhand has led to floods in the Ganga, Yamuna and Ramgnaga. The Ramganga has affected Bareilly, Moradabad and Shahjahanpur while the Ganga has flooded low-lying areas in Fatehgarh, Ballia, Ramabainagar, Allahabad and Kanpur. Yamuna is rising in Agra and Mathura.
Ghagra, Sharda, Rapti to release of water from dams in Nepal. The worsthit districts include Gonda, Barabanki, Bahraich and Lakhimpur Kheri. Floods in Sharda have affected many villages in Lakhimpur and Sitapur. Rapti has flooded villages in Balrampur, Siddhartha Nagar and Basti.
Three boys, between 12 and 15 years, drowned in Shahjahanpur, taking the death toll this monsoon to over 95.
Morning showers turned the weather pleasant in Lucknow, bringing relief from two days of hot and humid conditions. Maximum temperature was 30.8 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal.
Meanwhile, as per the monsoon status report, the average per district rainfall recorded in the state from June 1 to August 23 is 619.4 mm, 1% above normal. West UP has received more rains, with average per district rains here being 600.9 mm, 7% above normal. In east UP, the average per district rains has been 631.6 mm, 3% below normal.
Bundelkhand has recorded good rains this monsoon. While total rains in Banda has been 23% above normal, rainfall in Jhansi has been 15% above normal and in Hamirpur 21% above normal. Lalitpur has recorded 68% above normal rains, which is second highest in the state after Kanshiram Nagar which has received 93% above normal rains.
The low rainfall recording districts include Firozabad (23% before normal), Rae Bareli (44% below normal), Baghpat (44% below normal), Kushinagar (52% below normal) and Maharajganj (61% below normal). State Met director JP Gupta said rainfall was reported from many places in the state on Tuesday. He predicted that northern region of the state along Indo-Nepal border will receive more rains in comparison to other parts of the state.
