Five states summoned by ECI to discuss assembly polls

PANAJI: The election commission of India (ECI) has called the chief electoral officers of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur on September 22 to discuss the preparation and tentative dates for the forthcoming assembly elections in respective states.

Speaking to TOI chief electoral officer Gonesh Koyu said that they have been called on September 22 to take the reviews of election preparation in the state.

Sources in chief electoral office said that tentative dates may be discussed during the meeting.

Koyu said that the electoral roll will be completed by Janaury 2012 anytime after which the state could go in for elections.

Koyu also said that around 96% of voters have been covered under electoral photo identity card (EPIC) and it would be a continuous process till all electorates registered in the electoral roll receive cards.

During the visit of chief election commissioner S Y Quraushi to Goa in August, the election commission had indicated that the assembly polls, due next year, in five states may be clubbed together. Elections in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur are due in the first half of 2012.
