In response to the writ petition filed on the issue by Forest Research Institute, the Uttarakhand High Court has ordered a stay on the action of the Dehradun district administration of resuming ownership of the Forest Rangers College ground.

According to institute director Sharad Singh Negi, the High Court has ordered unlocking of the gates of the ground locked by the district administration.

Meanwhile, the FRI has also filed a contempt of court case against the previous District Magistrate of Dehradun for ordering demolition of the Rangers’ College boundary wall for road expansion.

Additionally, the Citizens For Green Doon group filed a public interest litigation in the High Court on Tuesday seeking return of the Rangers College ground to FRI and preventing the administration from converting it from a playground for any other purpose.

Earlier this month, the then Dehradun DM, Sachin Kurve, had said that the FRI had not renewed the lease for the Rangers Ground and ordered its acquisition by the State Government. The FRI director pointed out that the FRI was not a leaseholder of the land anymore because its ownership had been transferred to the institute decades before India gained Independence.

After finding the old documents pertaining to its ownership of the ground and receiving permission from the Union Government, the FRI filed a writ petition in the Nainital High Court. Speaking to The Pioneer, the institute director said that the High Court has ordered a stay on the district administration’s action and has ordered that the gates of the ground be unlocked immediately.

“We expect to receive a copy of the written order in a day. Additionally, the institute has also filed a contempt of court case against the previous Dehradun DM in the district court for ordering demolition of the Rangers’ College boundary wall for expansion of Lansdowne Chowk,” he added.

Chief coordinator Nitin Pandey said that the court order regarding the stay in favour of FRI will help preserve the environment and prevent an important playground of the city from being put to other uses.
