Members want inclusion of Kumaoni, Garhwali in 8th schedule

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) A strong demand was made in Lok Sabha today for incorporating the Kumaoni and the Garhwali languages in the eighth schedule, giving them status of state language.

Participating in a debate on a private member''s bill moved by Satpal Maharaj (Cong), members emphasised the need for incorporating these languages spoken mainly in Uttarakhand.

Maharaj, while initiating the discussion, made a strong plea for the inclusion of the Kumaoni and the Garhwali languages in the eighth schedule.

Hukumadev Narayan Yadav (BJP) said folk language and local language have not been respected in the country and asked the Centre to take steps to impart education in the local languages.
Supporting the bill, Shailendra Kumar (SP) said all local languages should be brought under the 8th Schedule.

Manganilal Mandal (JD-U) and Gorakh Nath Pandey (BSP) agreed with the views expressed by the members that English language has become a "status symbol" and this trend spoils of spirit of local languages.

Rejecting the criticism that the spread of English language has led to decline of local languages, Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJD) said there are more English-speaking people in India than in the United Kingdom.

He made a plea to the members not to encourage imposition of any particular language on the people.
