Under the state tourism policy of 2001, Uttarakhand's department of tourism had proposed to establish adventure centres across the state for the promotion and development of adventure tourism in the state. The plans are now taking shape. Sharing details about the steps, Rakesh Sharma, principal secretary – Tourism, Goverment of Uttarakhand and CEO – Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) revealed, “The government has plans to establish adventure centres across the state covering a wide range of adventure and outdoor activities like trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, water and snow skiing, paragliding, parasailing, hang gliding, mountain biking, angling, bird watching, etc in a phased manner.” This has been done keeping in mind the potential the state offers in adventure tourism.
So far the state has identified 19 locations on its shortlisted draft. Sharma said, “Among these, a world class regional water sports centre with quality accommodation and necessary support services is being planned at Tehri Lake (Asia’s largest manmade lake covering an area of 52 sq km) along with water based activities at Mori, Jaul Jibi, Bhimtal, Haripura and Bore Reservoir, Ganga Canal – Roorkee, Assan/Dakpatthar, Kaudiyala/Shivpuri and Panar/ Rameshwar/ Pancheshwar.” Further, the state has planned to develop aero sports activities in Pithoragarh and Gauchar; Raipur – Dehradun will be developed for ice skating; Auli for skiing; and, Harsil, Phalsima and Bhikiyasain – Almora, Bageshwar, Kotdwar and Mohan have been identified for land based adventure activities.
The distant aim is to create avenues that the state naturally offers. Also, the parameters of identifying those adventure centres is based on the ability to create resource base of the area/ habitation, contribution to promote new activity/area, contribution to enhance livelihood opportunities for locals.
According to Sharma, an Adventure Tourism Authority under the auspices of UTDB is also proposed for effective promotion and development of adventure tourism.
“The state government is making efforts to emerge strongly in the adventure tourism segment. The promotion and development of adventure tourism will not only help the much needed tourism product diversification to tap the growing domestic and international market, but will also greatly help in creating income generating opportunities for locals in remote mountain regions, thereby fulfilling the economic development objectives of the state.”
