4 people were killed, several injured in Sunday’s communal clash.

In the midst of the festive season, production in nearly 200-300 manufacturing units in Pantnagar industrial estate was partially affected on Monday following imposition of an indefinite curfew in the adjoining Rudrapur town in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

Attendance was poor due to curfew restrictions at Rudrapur where a large number of workers could not come out of their houses, industry sources said.

In one of the worst communal clashes in Uttarakhand, four people were killed and several others injured as rioting mobs attacked each others and torched vehicles and shops at Rudrapur yesterday.

“The curfew at Rudrapur should affect production at Pantnagar industrial units because of the curfew restrictions” said Pankaj Gupta, president, Industries Association of Uttarakhand.

“Since the festive season is on, the poor attendance in the factories will be bad for business houses like automobile and food and packaging,” said Gupta.

Top food and automobile industries like Bajaj Auto, Britannia, Nestle, Dabur and Tata Motors have set up manufacturing shops at Pantnagar industrial estate which houses a total of 417 units. Pantnagar is a key industrial estate developed by the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL).

When contacted by Business Standard, managers from different industrial units admitted that the poor attendance of workers affected production. However, they refused to quantify.

Though industrial workers also reside in other nearby towns like Lal Kuan, Haldwani and various villages, a big chunk comes from Rudrapur.

With Chief Minister B C Khanduri taking stock of the situation there, top officials said the situation is slowly limping back to normal.

“We will take a decision regarding the partial lifting of the curfew restrictions tomorrow morning,” said SSP Udhamsingh Nagar G S Martolia.

The chief minister has also ordered a high-level inquiry into the communal clashes, an official statement said.
