One arrested for ‘selling’ woman: Nisha Thapa, who has been accused of selling a local woman, was on Monday sent on 14-day judicial remand by a local court in Dehradun. A police team arrested her from Delhi and brought to Doon. Last week, son of Asha Uniyal alleged that she had been ‘sold’ in Kuwait and was being forced to work there. He also alleged she was sent on a forged passport.
Gang busted: In a major success, an international wildlife poachers’ gang was busted by Forest Department officials in Haldwani on Monday. The officials claimed to have arrested seven of them in a raid. Several bones of tigers have also been recovered from their possession. The officials were questioning them for further leads in the case.
Chain snatched: A chain of Kiran Nanda (55) was snatched by two bike-borne men on Monday evening in the Khurbura area. She was returning home after bringing milk from a nearby shop when she was targeted. She told the police that two men on black Pulsar bike came from behind and snatched her chain. She added there was no registration number on the bike.
Reviewed: In order to review the safety for the traffic flow, the Dehradun District Magistrate held a meeting with SSP, senior officials from the PWD, the MDDA, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) and the RTO here on Monday. He asked the officials to identify all the ways where accidents took place regularly. The DM further asked the officials to repaint the faded yellow lines as well as zebra lines on the main roads.

Drive against illegal quarrying launched: Following the orders of Champawat District Magistrate Ashish Joshi, officials of the Revenue and Forest Departments have launched a drive against illegal quarrying in the Bauntri area of the district. After a series of raids, officials have traced 16 trucks involved in the transportation of illegally mined material. The officials have videoed the movement of the trucks involved in illegal quarrying. A case in this regard has been registered at the Lohaghat police station.
Bodybuilding contest on Oct 22: The Eight Late Devi Lal Sah Memorial Classic (top 10) Bodybuilding Competition will be held at Chalet Hall in Nainital on October 22. More than 80 persons from across the state will participate in the contest. According to JS Bisht of the Uttarakhand Bodybuilding Association, the competition will be held in three categories- top 10 Uttarakhand (state level), Mr Nainital top 5 (district level) and Mr Udham Singh Nagar top 5 (district level). The winners will be given cash awards besides trophies and certificates. The organisers said more support was required to promote bodybuilding in the state. They also demanded the opening of a gymnasium in Nainital.
One killed, 9 hurt in accident: An old woman was killed while nine others were injured when the tempo they were travelling in was reportedly hit by a dumper in the Halduchaur area near Haldwani. The impact of the collision was such that the tempo overturned. The deceased has been identified as Basanti Devi (70) of Halduchaur. The dumper driver fled the spot after the accident.
Dept heads told to finalise proposals: Almora District Magistrate DS Garbyal has asked the heads of various departments to finalise their proposals with regard to the district plan for the next financial year. A meeting to discuss the plan was held at Almora on Monday. Garbyal also discussed major points related to the plan for the current and the next financial year. He said there would be a 50 per cent hike in the money to be spent in the plan for the next financial year as compared to this year.
Sale of adulterated eatables: The Udham Singh Nagar administration has decided to initiate a drive against the sale of adulterated eatables during Divali. District Magistrate PS Jangpangi has asked his subordinates and police officials to be vigilant. He said strict action would be taken against those found guilty. He has also asked officials of Jal Sansthan to carry out a sanitation campaign.
