Burglary bid in bank: A man who was trying to steal money from the State Bank of India branch at Doiwala was caught by an alert team of the police on Sunday night. According to police officials, a police party on night patrol heard some sounds coming from the bank building. On a close scrutiny, it was found that a person was trying to break into the bank branch. He had been equipped with various instruments, including an electric drill, to break the bank vault. The accused has been identified as Dhoom Singh Chauhan. He has admitted to several attempts to break into bank buildings in Dehradun district and also looting of a petrol pump at Rishikesh. A case has been registered against him.
Student held with charas: A student of local DAV College has been nabbed with 1.25 kg of charas. According to police officials, Amit Chauhan, a resident of Tyuni, was caught by a police party at Vikasnagar. On search, 1.25 kg of charas was found from his possession. He was carrying charas from Tyuni in Chakrata tehsil for Dehradun.
Purva sainik sangathan: Resolving to extend mass support to fair candidates during the forthcoming election of the association’s office-bearers, members of the Uttarakhand Purva Sainik Evam Ardh Sainik Sangathan held a meeting in their head office here on Sunday. Colonel Tejender Pal Tyagi (retd) chaired the event and encouraged everyone to serve the association as well as the country. He emphasised that the contesting candidates should never become the part of all those schemes of the association, which was not framed for the welfare of the people.

Make use of funds for backward regions: Pant:Cabinet minister Prakash Pant has stressed the need to make use of funds available under the Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) for the benefit of the marginalised sections of society. Speaking at a meeting on the utilisation of the BRGF at Champawat on Monday, Pant said a workshop would be organised for public representatives of the village and town levels in December before preparing proposals under the scheme. He related that 10 sectors had been identified under the scheme in which Gram Panchayats would get 50 per cent, Regional Panchayats 30 per cent and Zila Panchayats would get 20 per cent of the funds. The minister has suggested that the funds must be utilised to develop basic facilities in the district.
Repair of rain-hit infrastructure:District Magistrate of Champawat Ashish Joshi has expressed his displeasure at the officials of some departments failing to prioritise the works to be done with regards to repairs and rebuilding of infrastructure devastated in the rains. Joshi held a meeting to review the proposals with regards to the repairs and reconstruction of infrastructure under the Disaster Management Plan. He has ordered that the officials submit proposals for reconstruction and repairs within three days along with related certificates. He has asked the officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), Irrigation and Minor Irrigation Departments to send their proposals in the prescribed format.
Man accused of poisoning wife:A resident of Haldwani has reportedly died after consuming poison. Her parents have accused her husband of having poisoned their daughter. It is learnt that 30-year-old Kanchan had been married to Lakshman Palariya about 10 years ago. She had been helping her brother Pawan with paddy harvest over the past three days. However, on Sunday morning when he went to fetch her from her house in Naya Abad Nagar locality, he found her in an unconscious state with froth coming out from her mouth. When he asked her husband to give him his motorcycle for transporting her to the hospital, the latter refused initially and later handed over the keys. Kanchan died while she was being treated. Before her death, the police managed to take down her statement. It is yet to be ascertained whether the victim was murdered or she committed suicide. Police investigations are on in the matter.
Women flay police for ‘inaction’:A large number of women from Ramnagar and adjoining areas have criticised the police for having failed to arrest the persons responsible for the illegal sale of liquor in the area. The women have aired their resentment over the fact that despite having handed over a motorcycle along with a consignment of liquor that was being illegally sold to the police, the latter have failed to nab the owner of the motorcycle till now. The women went on to hold a protest in the town on Sunday. They have demanded that steps be taken to check liquor smuggling in the area provide more and security be provided to women.
