Doon man found dead in Jammu: The body of MK Sharma of Dehradun has been found at Jammu railway station. Some passengers who noticed the body informed the Railway police. An empty revolver was also found near the body. A case has been registered and investigations are on.
Bhaiya Dooj celebrated: DEHRADUN: Bhaiya Dooj was celebrated with fervour across the state on Friday. All banks and state government offices remained closed on the occasion.
BJP workers’ meeting: State BJP general secretary Dhan Singh Rawat will preside over a meeting of BJP workers from Roorkee, in Haridwar and Dehradun (West) on Saturday. The meeting is being organised to discuss preparations with regard to LK Advani’s Jan Chetna Yatra reaching the state on November 17.

Nainital Film Fest from tomorrow: The three-day Third Nainital Film Festival will be organised here from October 30. The festival will be devoted to Mani Kaul, a famous stage artiste, Gursharan Singh and Kuber Dutt, said Zahoor Alam, a well-known stage artist and organiser of the festival. “The festival will be inaugurate with a symposium on the “Need of the Cinema of Resistance” where Sanjay Joshi will be the main speaker and the chief guest will be cine artist Viswa Mohan Badola. The session will be chaired by poet Manglesh Dabral, he said.
Region spends Rs 2 cr on fire crackers: At least Rs 2 crore worth of fire crackers had been burnt in the Kumaon region in the past three days. The town of Haldwani topped with the sales of fire crackers of about Rs 1 crore, according to Ajay Rajput, a fire cracker seller of the region. “The residents of the towns of Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh spent about Rs 20 lakh each on fire crackers this year while the small towns around Haldwani registered fire cracker sales of Rs 70 lakh in three days of October 26, 27 and 28, said Rajput.
Shop gutted at Tanakpur: A tailoring shop at ward no. 7 in Tanakpur town caught fire when the shop owner, Nanhe Miyan’s family was busy bursting fire crackers. The fire damaged three sewing machines and cloths worth about Rs 50,000. A fire engine doused the fire. The incidents of losses due to fire during Diwali were also reported from various places of the region, including Kashipur, Ramnagar, Haldwani, Garur and Jaspur towns.
Handloom Expo concludes: Handloom goods worth Rs 1.80 crore were sold during 11-day Handloom Expo held in Pithoragarh town from October 17 to 28. “The expo, organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and the Uttarakhand Handloom Corporation, witnessed maximum sales of the Kanta brand of sarees made by weavers of West Bengal followed by printed bedsheets made in UP and Uttarakhand,” said Fateh Bahadur Singh, Assistant Director of the Industries Department of Uttarakhand. “The expo, which saw sales of products prepared by 45 cooperatives and self-help groups from the states of West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and UP, creates jobs for more than 600 handloom workers,” claimed Fateh Bahadur Singh.
Couple held on charge of murder: The police has arrested a couple from Bilaspur village of Rampur district of UP in connection with the killing a local youth a month ago. “The police acted on a complaint filed by Mansa Ram of Rudrapur who alleged that his son Munish Kumar was murdered by the couple. The police after investigation raided the couple’s residence and arrested them. They have confessed to the killing of the 19-year-old youth from Rudrapur due to personal rivalry,” said Ashok Bhatt, ASP, Rudrapur.
