Uttarakhand has decided to build a new Assembly at Gairsain in
Chamoli. The state Cabinet, which met at Gairsain Saturday, decided that
the foundation stone would be laid on January 14.
“Gairsain, which is like heart of both the Kumaoun and Garhwal
divisions, is an emotional place. Gairsain is associated with the
agitation which was launched for getting statehood,” Chief Minister
Vijay Bahuguna said.
Bahuguna said at least one session a year would be held at
Gairsain. The decision to build the new assembly has paved the way for
Gairsain’s future status as “summer capital” of the Uttarakhand. Sources
said the 13th Finance Commission has already sanctioned Rs 88 crore for
the construction of the assembly building and other infrastructure
required. “Rs 25 crore might be spent on the construction of assembly
building,” a source said.
Apart from the assembly building, the government has also decided
to set up new schools, colleges, a university campus and a polytechnic
institute at Gairsain.
