‘RTI Act a tool for ensuring transparency, accountability and tackling corruption’

 Uttarakhand Information Commissioner Vinod Nautiyal said that the Right of Information Act has become a tool for ensuring transparency, accountability and tackling corruption with the common people using this Act to procure information. He stressed that after procuring information one should register a case where needed, in stead of retaining the revelation simply as information.

 Speaking on right to information in a legal literacy programme organised by Law Faculty of HNB Garhwal Central University Pauri campus, Nautiyal emphasised on the need for legal workshops in rural areas so that the rural population can also learn about the importance of the RTI Act. He said Uttarakhand in the State in India where the maximum number of complaints and appeals were redressed- 8000 cases. He said that due to the activeness of the Information Commission, 17 manuals have been prepared and are currently being uploaded on the internet. Explaining the different section of the Act, Nautiyal stressed that the 24 departments of the Union Government are exempted from this Act, but the information can be sought if it concerns violation of human rights. Information of private institutions can be sought only through the controlling authority and the controlling authority will send the notice to the institution concerned under section 11 of the Act.

The campus director TP Pant presided over the function. Head of Law department Professor Subhash Gupta said that there is need for legal literacy. Elementary knowledge of the law is necessary while knowledge of RTI Act is vital to bring about transparency and tackle corruption.
