The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had earlier said that it would announce the names of its candidates for five Lok Sabha seats in the state in February, but the party has been delaying the announcement. Till now, the party has only announced the name of Harish Arya on the Almora seat.
Some insiders say that this is being done to assess the names of the official candidates of both the Congress and the BJP after which the party would decide upon its own candidates.
The Aam Aadmi Party thinks that it has good chances in the state on account of the high literacy rates here and the high awareness among the local populace.
The party has been able to attract a chunk of the intelligentsia of the state including the president of Uttarakhand Mahila Manch Kamla Pant, former director general of police Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, renowned folk singer Narendra Singh Negi, Shamsher Singh Bisht, Dr Shekhar Pathak and Rajiv Lochan Sah as supporters.
AAP’s election steering committee member Shamsher Singh Bisht says that the delay is being caused due to the high number of applicants and the entry of eminent personalities in the fray. “The announcements would be made very soon and all the factors would be taken into consideration in this,” says Bisht.
