For all the five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand, sons and daughters may start as favourites to contest from the ruling Congress this time.
Despite facing stinging criticism on the issue of dynastic rule, former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand chief minister N D Tiwari and a host of top party leaders are trying to push their sons and daughters in the coming general election.
Those who are in the intense dynastic politics race include Chief Minister Harish Rawat, state Congress chief Yashpal Arya and former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and former union minister Satpal Maharaj. All these leaders are lobbying hard to get tickets for their sons and daughters. Since there are only five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand, all of them appeared to have entered into a tacit understanding as they seek tickets for their political heirs (rpt political heirs) from different constituencies. “When it comes to seek tickets for their sons and daughters, all these leaders are united. Otherwise you will see them fighting themselves,” said a Congress leader requesting anonymity.
Smarting from the new parenthood, Tiwari is seeking Congress ticket for his son Rohit Shekhar from Nainital seat. Earlier, Tiwari wanted to contest independently from Nainital but now he is seeking ticket for Shekhar. “I think Rohit is suitable for Nainital seat,” said Tiwari. On the other hand, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav wants Tiwari to contest from the party ticket.
The sources close to Tiwari said in case Congress is willing to give ticket, Tiwari will seek for Shekhar. Otherwise, he would like to contest independently from Nainital which has suddenly become a hot seat with a host of top BJP leaders like M M Joshi and former state chief minister B S Koshiyari also throwing their hats into the ring from Nainital.
Similarly, the Chief Minister has started lobbying to get Congress ticket for his daughter Anupama and son Anand Singh from Haridwar constituency which he himself represents in the 15th Lok Sabha.
Taking the advantage of the situation, Rawat’s rivals Vijay Bahuguna, Satpal Maharaj and Yashpal Arya are also ready to demand tickets for their respective sons – Saket, Suyash and Sanjiv. While Bahuguna wants Saket to contest from Tehri, Maharaj wants his son Suyash to contest from Pauri and Arya has selected Almora seat for his son Sanjiv. And when they seek tickets for their sons and daughters, all these leaders are unwilling to contest this time.
When contacted, state party spokesman Surendra Kumar only said the party high command will decide who should get the party ticket. “I will only say that it up to the party high command to take a final decision,” said Kumar.
On the contrary, there is no such demand for sons and daughters from top BJP and other party leaders in the state.
