Uttarakhand's chief election commissioner lists 97,000 defence, paramilitary voters

DEHRADUN: A week after Supreme Court asked the chief election commissioner (CEC) to allow voters working in armed and paramilitary forces to vote in the places of their current posting, chief electoral office (CEO) here, has begun a massive exercise to ascertain the exact number of such voters who are posted out of their home towns.

A senior officer at Dehradun CEO said the department has tentatively listed 97,000 such voters. 93,323 were enrolled as service voters on the 2009 Lok Sabha polls list.

The service voters can either cast their votes on the specific polling days at their current place of posting or send their votes to their respective home towns, through postal ballots or make proxy votes.

It will be for the first time that the service voters will vote at their current place of posting, said a senior election officer.

As per an IAS officer, the proxy voting option will let these voters to nominate any member of his or her family in Uttarakhand to exercise the franchise on their behalf. "Sole objective of the exercise is to ensure that no service voter is left out from voting ", said CEO Radha Raturi, adding that efforts are on to further update the list of service voters.

Raturi further informed TOI that about 1, 50,000 personnel from different government departments, will be pressed into service on different polling centers across Uttarkhand for the May 7 polls.
