Fairs define culture, identity of state: CM

New Tehri, February 13

Chief Minister Harish Rawat inaugurated the Tehri Vasantotsav (spring festival) at the Bauraudi stadium here today. He said fairs and melas played an important role in defining the culture and identity of the state.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Tourism Minister Dinesh Dhanai, Urban Development Minister Preetam Panwar and Panchayati Raj Minister Preetam Singh. Addressing the gathering, he said the Tehri Lake would prove a boon for Uttarakhand as it would help to provide new employment opportunities.

The Chief Minister said folk singers through their work should motivate rural people and invoke love for their native villages.

He praised Nehru Institute of Mountaineering employees for working in extreme cold conditions at Kedarnath to restore the lost glory of the shrine.

The Chief Minster said the Char Dham yatra started by the government this year was able to spread the message that the state was safe for tourists even during the winter. Around 50,000 pilgrims visited the Char Dham shrines this winter.

He presented the first licence issued by the zila panchayat to a local resident for running a houseboat in the Tehri Lake. A souvenir about the vasantotsav was released on the occasion. He announced upgrade of Tehri Graduate College to a postgraduate college.

On a demand raised by Youth Congress workers for a campus of Sridev Suman University in New Tehri, the Chief Minister directed the university Vice-Chancellor to explore options and do the needful following the guidelines.

Rawat announced the construction of a bridge on the Ghansali-Chamiyala road and sanctioned the construction of the Chamiyala-Bhoda road. He stressed on the need to conserve water through the Kala Banao Yojana and urged farmers not to leave their fields barren. He advised them to grow walnut and bhimal trees and earn a bonus of Rs 300 to Rs 400 after three years.

The Chief Minister said the role of anganwadi and Asha workers would be extended in the state.

Panchayati Raj Minister Preetam Singh, Tourism Minister Dinesh Dhanai and Urban Development Minister Preetam Panwar stressed on organising such fairs and melas to preserve the local culture.

However, the festivities were marred with a controversy when New Tehri Municipal Council president Umesh Chandra Gusain alleged that he and other ward members were not invited to the function.

Gusain said the Municipal Council was an integral part of the government but the zila panchayat did not bother to send an invitation. However, zila panchayat president Sona Sajwan refuted the allegation and said invitations were sent to the president and the ward members in advance.
